TSS Visa English Language Requirements
The English language requirements for the
Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa (subclass 482) depend on the stream under which
you are applying.
Applicants must provide evidence of English proficiency unless they qualify for an exemption.
Key English Requirements by Stream:
-
1. Medium-Term Stream:
Applicants must demonstrate at least Vocational English proficiency (or higher)
unless exempt.
This reflects a moderate ability to communicate effectively in workplace settings.
Accepted English language tests include:
- IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
- OET (Occupational English Test)
- TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language – Internet Based)
- PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English)
- Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE)
-
2. Short-Term Stream:
Applicants must demonstrate at least Competent English proficiency (or higher)
unless exempt.
Competent English means the applicant can communicate effectively in most daily and professional
situations.
Accepted English language tests are the same as those for the
Medium-Term Stream.
-
3. Labour Agreement Stream:
English language requirements for this stream depend on the specific terms of the Labour
Agreement between the employer and the Australian Government.
Applicants should refer directly to the agreement for detailed criteria.
Test Validity and Exemptions:
- English test results are typically valid for three years from the date of the
test.
- Applicants who are citizens of countries such as the UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, or
Ireland may be exempt from testing requirements.
- Other exemptions may apply for applicants who have studied or worked in English-speaking
environments.
