Visits as a Standard Visitor
The Standard Visitor Visa allows individuals to visit the UK
for short-term purposes such as tourism, leisure, family visits, business meetings, or attending
events.
It is the most common visa route for people visiting the UK for up to 6 months.
Key Features
- Stay in the UK for up to 6 months per visit.
- Permitted for tourism, business meetings, academic events, or family visits.
- May include short-term study (up to 30 days) or private medical treatment.
- Does not allow full-time work or long-term study.
- Visitors must show intent to return to their home country after the visit.
Eligibility Requirements
- A genuine purpose for visiting (tourism, family, or business).
- Proof of sufficient funds for accommodation, travel, and living expenses.
- Evidence of ties to your home country (employment, family, or property).
- Valid passport and compliance with UK health and character rules.
Application Process
- Apply online via the official UK Government website.
- Submit supporting documents such as itinerary, financial statements, and invitation (if
applicable).
- Pay the visa fee (£115 for up to 6 months).
- Attend a biometric appointment and wait for a decision (usually within 3
weeks).
Once approved, you can enter the UK and carry out permitted activities under the conditions of your
visa.
Longer-term visitors may apply for 2, 5, or 10-year multiple-entry visas.
Pro Tip:
You cannot switch to another visa type while in the UK on a Standard Visitor Visa — always apply
from outside the UK if you plan to stay longer.
